INTRODUCTORY NOTE TO AT SWIM-TWO-BIRDS

I thought it might be useful for the reader to read this introductory note before proceeding any further. As the story is quite complicated, this page is designed to help you not to lose the plot and make some sense of what you are about to read.

LIST OF CHARACTERS

  • The narrator: An undergraduate student who lives in Dublin with his uncle, drinks too much and invents stories in his spare time. These take the form of a novel he is writing about a man called Trellis.

  • His uncle: A very religious man who spends his time arguing with his nephew and complaining about the latter's inclement to idleness.

  • Brinsley: One of the narrator's friend.

  • Dermot Trellis:  Owner of a public house, he spends his time between writing a novel about the consequences of sin and sleeping. Trellis does not have to create his characters as it is possible for him to borrow or hire them from the work of other novelists. The main characters of his story are the following:

  • The Pooka Fergus MacPhellimey, a species of human Irish devil.

  • Finn Mac Cool, a legendary character.

  • Paul Shanahan, a man hired by Trellis to perform various small and unimportant tasks.

  • Peggy, a domestic servant.

  • John Furriskey, a depraved character, whose task is to attack women.

  • Sheila Lamont, a beautiful woman and mother of Orlick Trellis.

Now I think you are ready to step into the hypertext version of At Swim -Two-Birds.
