Friday, December 22 through December 24, 2000 Flagstaff to Winter Park, Colorado I finally got caught up in the office, packed, and loaded my pickup. It seemed like an unending list of tasks. Among other things, I applied online for a position in the Bush-Cheney Administration. I heard somewhere that they have received around 21,000 online applications. I read somewhere else that Bush has 6,000 jobs to fill. Correct me if Im wrong, but it looks like one out of three applicants gets a job. I applied for a position in HUD. Having served ten years as a commissioner for the Flagstaff Housing Authority and having specialized in housing in the Arizona Legislature, I can bring much experience to the table. Its unusual to find a conservative with such an interest and background in low-income housing issues. Kelley Barton and Ellen Vest graciously agreed to watch my office, feed Guido, and maintain my hot tubs pH and oxidation. Im sure theyll also hop in once in a while. Have fun, ladies. It was 6:00 P.M. by the time I headed out of Flagstaff. I arrived in Moab, Utah, around midnight and found a really nice room for $27. The breakfast in the lobby in the morning consisted of a package of Quaker instant oatmeal and hot water from the coffee maker, but who cares when you get a deal like that. On Saturday, I continued on Scenic Byway 128 along the Colorado River to I-70. I stopped for some large rocks for ballast and noticed that my right rear studded snow tire was really, really low. This area of Utah is pure wilderness and the nearest air is in Fruita, Colorado. I made it to Discount Tire Company in Grand Junction and, as they were fixing the flat, discovered about 12 inches of tread separation. Not good. Lot's of bad press on that lately. They mounted and installed two used studded snow tires and I was on my way. The roads were clear all the way, including Eisenhower Tunnel
and Berthoud Pass. I parked at Winter Park base along the railroadthe
old Denver and Rio Grande enters Moffatt Tunnel right thereand
called Snoasis. Jason came down with the snowmobile. |
