Hi. Im Ben Benton from Flagstaff, Arizona. I believe that you will enjoy my daily journal from Winter Park, Colorado, Ski Resort during spring break 2000. I left downtown Flagstaff Sunday morning, March 19 with my skis, duffle, laptop computer, and portable 4-person spa, and ended up at Snoasis, a lodge midway up the mountain in Winter Park. My journal will continue through the end of March. Youll read about Winter Park Ski Resort, Snoasis, Sunspot Lodge, the great people who work here, and anything else I can think of to write about. Im the author of National Park Employment Data, a guide to working in national parks, which is available for purchase on my web site at www.gorp.com/nped/. Ive been working in national parks and ski areas off and on for over twenty years. Because I want the data in my book to always be fresh, I continually test the concepts, employers, and tips that I provide. I first worked at Winter Park in the late 70s while I was a student at Arizona State University. |

Saturday, March 25, 2000 Winter Park to Glenwood Springs Today I worked at Lunch Rock, serving chili, stew, hot dogs, and bratwursts to a long line out the door at 11,200 feet atop Mary Jane. It must be a couple miles from Snoasis, because Gabe and I stretched out and slept in the back of the cat all the way up. We closed Lunch Rock at 3:30, cleaned the place and brought all the empty Gott insulated food containers back to Snoasis. I packed and caught a ride to my truck from Chris actually two trips since we had to bring the hot tub down. By six I was on my way back to Arizona. I made it as far as Glenwood Springs and got the last room at the Ramada, right on the Colorado River, just down from the Glenwood Hot Springs. I put my swim suit under my jeans and headed down to the hidden hot spring next to the I-70 on-ramp. There were several people there and the water was perfect. I stayed until 12:30 or 1:00 A.M. The pools of steaming water are actually the output from Glenwood Hot Spring, a world famous spa and hotel just to the north of I-70 in downtown Glenwood Springs. A huge culvert carries the water under I-70 to the site of this clandestine hot tub on the edge of the Colorado River. When I arrived, two people were busy building a new pool, lower than the rest, right in the flow of the Colorado. Several pools terrace from the culvert to the river, with the hottest being near the culvert. When the builders left, I tried out the newest pool and give it an A+. Its several degrees below a hundred, so I could stay in for more than a hour. Since its right in the current of the river, icy water from the Colorado mixes with the hot spring water like marble cake. Thoroughly relaxed, I returned to the Ramada and fell asleep
in seconds. |
