Hi. Im Ben Benton from Flagstaff, Arizona. I believe that you will enjoy my daily journal from Winter Park, Colorado, Ski Resort during spring break 2000. I left downtown Flagstaff Sunday morning, March 19 with my skis, duffle, laptop computer, and portable 4-person spa, and ended up at Snoasis, a lodge midway up the mountain in Winter Park. My journal will continue through the end of March. Youll read about Winter Park Ski Resort, Snoasis, Sunspot Lodge, the great people who work here, and anything else I can think of to write about. Im the author of National Park Employment Data, a guide to working in national parks, which is available for purchase on my web site at www.gorp.com/nped/. Ive been working in national parks and ski areas off and on for over twenty years. Because I want the data in my book to always be fresh, I continually test the concepts, employers, and tips that I provide. I first worked at Winter Park in the late 70s while I was a student at Arizona State University. |

Previous 12/22 Spring Break |
Monday, March 20, 2000 Its Hot Tub Time As I wrote yesterday, I arrived in Winter Park around midnight. I was on the schedule to prep cook at 6:30 A.M. I was up and ready, but Peter changed his mind and put me on the grill from 9 A.M. until 5 P.M. The lack of sleep didnt stop me from setting up the spa after work. Snoasis has a huge hot water storage tank, so I was able to fill the spa with 102 degree water using a long hose from the dock area to the storage room where I set it up. The only problem is that Tim, Snoasis manager, doesnt know about it yet. The spa travels in two boxes, about 22 inches square and 30 inches high. One box has the jet units with pump, filter, and heater, and the other box contains the wood surround, liner, and cover. They weigh about 70 pounds each. When filled, it holds 268 gallons of water and weighs about 2,300 pounds. Theres not much Tim can do about it if he doesnt like it in the Pepsi storage room. Everybody at Snoasis is getting excited about using the spa. Living on the mountain is like having a remote cabin in the woods. Any change in routine is always welcome. ***** Although Colorados ski season got off to a crummy start in November, the snow is great now. Students from all over are here this week for spring break. We were real busy today and Snoasis did about $7,000 in the four hours were open. I have tomorrow off, so Ill head down to the Balcony House to get my ski pass. I dont have to tell you what happens after that!
