Distributed Proofreading [permanent link]
Project Gutenberg is a project dedicated to putting public domain books on the Internet so that anybody can donwload and read them. The books have to scanned (usually by optical character readers) and then proofread to correct mistakes. The process of proofreading is labour intensive but this may now become easier thanks to the Distributed Proofreading project which allows people to compare the text against the original images one page at a time on the Web.
