What does this Cadet Program do?
This program is involved in many
activities both within the department and the community. We've
helped out with first-aid/medical support at boy scout hikes and
numerous other events. Many members of the post also ride on the
county rescue units as part of the crew. We also train in confined
space, rope rescue, and fire suppression. Some Explorers are also
certified as rescue skin and scuba divers, and can train with the
county rescue divers at various sites around Miami-Dade.
How do I join?
To become a member in this
program,
you must first attend the last Tuesday night meeting of any month and be placed on
our waiting list. These meetings are held between 7:00 pm and 9:00
pm at either; Station-13 (6000 SW 87th Avenue) or at the USAR/FEMA
Training Site (7100 SW 107 Avenue). Please check the calendar link
to the left to find out where we are meeting-we usually switch
locations every month. If you attend please wear appropriate
clothing including covered toe shoes, and pants.
How old must I be?
You must be between 14 and 21
years of age, and have completed (or currently be in) the 9th grade.
Will I receive any training?
Yes, before you can become a
Cadet, you must first successfully complete our three month CPR
and First Responder class. This class is usually held in the summer,
and starts out with about 40 people. Usually, only about 50% or less
will finish the class and become Explorers. We hold the new recruits
to a very high standard, all exams must score above an 80% to stay
in the program. Once you have completed the class, you will have a
CPR/First Aid card, and your EMT-First
Responder certification.
Who do I contact for more
