Black Sand Beach
Our first stop was on the big island of Hawaii.  Just in time to walk on lava that was still hot from the previous week, and to see lava flow down the mountain and into the sea at night!
This is Heather, just before the Hawaiian tried to throw her into the volcano. . . just like they did in old times.
Family Trip to Hawaii 2002
They really do give you leis when you get off the plane!
The lava hardened here and continued to flow underneath, pouring into the sea and sending up plumes of steam.  Above is the newest black sand beach in the world, on that particular day.

Lava flowed over the roadway leaving only a signpost.
Val, Lil and Heather in a bamboo forest at the botanical gardens.
This is Val after seeing that our first black sand beach was a hippie nudist hangout. (and there was a lot hanging out there!)
Our last sunrise in Hilo, HI.

Other Happenings in 2002
Glenwood Springs wildfire
Alan spent a shift working at the great wildfire of 2002, not to be confused with the great wildfire of the early 90's It was pretty spooky down there, seeing how far a fire can jump across the Colorado River.  Like a tornado, it seemed to pick some houses to burn all but the chimney, and some were left untouched.
Heather's Sweet 16th Birthday!
Heather  turned 16 on September 11.  We had a party to celebrate her driving independence, and some of her crazy friends were there.
