The PMRC released the Filthy Fifteen to the public in 1985. These fifteen songs, according to Tipper Gore, fit the mold of the types of songs that the PMRC would like to see banned. In their original proposal, songs would be rated according to several categories:

V for violence
O for references to the occult
D/A for overuse of drugs/alcohol
X for harsh sexual content
