Episode 2.4
"A Midnight Clear"
Written by Joseph D. Blackerby
EXT. DESTINY - NIGHT
A light snow falls from the sky, gently covering the rooftops
and streets of Destiny. Somewhere, music plays, a classical
version of "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear". The town is
quiet, the lights in the buildings are out save for a few
with Christmas lights up.
EXT. MOUNTAIN FOREST - CONTINUOUS
WE move over the treetops, the green slowly disappearing
under a white blanket. On the other side of the mountain, a
thin trail of smoke can be seen.
INT. CAVE - CONTINUOUS
Whipping around the mountain, WE enter a small cave entrance.
A faint yellow glow can be seen as it WE turn a corner, the
outline of FROST (Willem Dafoe) can be seen, hunched over a
small campfire. He's cooking meat in an old iron skillet and
when a piece looks done, he picks it up and gnaws a big piece
off. He leans over to the body of SAM WHITAKER and cuts off
another chunk of flesh with a jagged knife. He throws it
onto the skillet and begins to cook it.
Only now does he hear the faint sounds of music floating into
the cave. He stops cooking and listens intently. A big
grins comes over his face. He looks over at FOWLER (Edward
Burns), who is tied up in the corner.
FROST
Can you hear it? Free music. Must
be your lucky night.
A big evil smile creeps over his face and he goes back to
cooking.
INT. BLUE EYE DINER - MORNING
Sheriff GRETCHEN BANKS (Lake Bell) sits at a table, looking
around and checking her watch anxiously. PENNY ROSE
(Sherilyn Fenn) walks up to her table.
PENNY
What's it gonna be sweetie? Ya
been here for twenty minutes.
BANKS
You haven't seen Fowler have you?
PENNY
No, not for a while. Was he
supposed to meet ya?
BANKS
Yeah and he's usually not late.
PENNY
That's definitely true.
BANKS
You two -- you've been getting
close?
PENNY
(with a sly smile)
You could say that. But it's still
young. And word has it you've been
seen with a certain doctor.
BANKS
Does it get around that fast?
PENNY
Faster than you think. Some people
round here find out they're engaged
before they're proposed to.
Banks scoots back from her seat.
BANKS
Well if you see him, could you tell
him I'm looking for him?
PENNY
Sure thing hun.
INT. JAKE'S ROOM - WEEPING WILLOW HOTEL - DAY
JAKE RIVKIN (Jared Padalecki) sits on his bed, looking on his
desk. The lock box he took from Reverend Cleaver's room sits
in the middle, unopened. He stares at it, unsure of what to
do next. Finally he stands, grabs a nearby hammer and with a
deft blow, destroys the lock. With trembling hands, he opens
the box and looks inside.
He reaches in and emerges with an odd looking amulet. It's
circular, but has a triangular ruby in the center. He
stares at, trying to make sense of it.
His doorknob jiggles. He quickly puts the amulet behind his
back. BONNIE RIVKIN (Elizabeth Pena) enters and her mother
radar instantly goes off.
BONNIE
Jake, what's going on? I heard a
big bang.
JAKE
Nothin' Mom. Just movin' some
stuff around.
BONNIE
Why do you have your hands behind
your back?
JAKE
Dunno. Just do.
BONNIE
Jake, don't play me for stupid.
What are you hiding?
JAKE
Nothing, really --
Bonnie moves in and spins Jake around, but his hands are now
empty.
JAKE
See Mom, I told you. You gotta
trust me.
BONNIE
But I don't.
JAKE
Mom, about Dad...you don't think --
BONNIE
I don't know what to think. I walk
in, he's dead and you're covered in
blood.
Jake is stunned. His own mother thinks he killed his dad.
JAKE
But Dad, he was involved in
something -- something with Cleaver
and I'm gonna prove --
BONNIE
You're not to do anything. Enough
have suffered and I will not have
you drag someone else through the
mud.
(her eyes fill with tears)
Just leave it alone...
She leaves the room. Jake's eyes fill with water as he
fights back his emotion. He reaches under his sleeve and
pulls the amulet out.
EXT. DESTINY FBI OFFICE - DAY
Banks knocks loudly on the door, but doesn't get an answer.
Finally, she reaches into a pouch on her uniform belt and
pulls out a small lockpicking device. Takes a glance around
and mutters --
BANKS
The town Sheriff, breaking and
entering. Gotta appreciate the
irony.
She gets the lock open and enters.
INT. DESTINY FBI OFFICE - CONTINUOUS
Banks walks inside, flips the lights on.
BANKS
Fowler? You here?
No answer. She frowns and inspects the office, looking to
see anything looks out of place. She hears the front door
alarm DING. She hurries up front --
BANKS
Fowler --
It's Jake and he looks just as confused to see her.
JAKE
Hey. Where's Agent Fowler?
BANKS
I was hoping you could tell me.
JAKE
I've been trying his cell --
BANKS
I know -- no answer. When was the
last time you saw him?
JAKE
Sometime early yesterday I think.
BANKS
What'd you need him for?
JAKE
Just needed him to take a look at
something. Nothing big. You think
he's all right?
BANKS
Oh yeah. Sure. It's just...weird.
She looks at Fowler's desk and suddenly she looks worried.
BANKS
Oh no...
JAKE
What is it?
BANKS
I know where he went.
JAKE
You still think he's all right?
BANKS
No, I don't.
Jake looks over her shoulder and sees a map of the nearby
forest with some places marked.
JAKE
The forest?
BANKS
It's a case we're working on.
JAKE
The Epps thing?
BANKS
And now Sam Whitaker.
She starts for the door.
JAKE
Hold up, I'm coming with you.
BANKS
Jake, you can't -- no. You're not
law enforcement.
JAKE
But I can help you.
BANKS
Jake I can't let you go.
JAKE
Here, just let me grab my laptop.
You can fill me in and we can argue
on the way. Trust me -- I can help
you.
Banks sighs, conflicted because she knows he's right.
INT. CAVE - DAY
Fowler is alone in the cave except for the bloody remains of
Sam Whitaker's body. Blood coats the corner and looks like a
butcher shop. Fowler tries to free himself, but he's tied
very tightly. Frost appears from around the corner and
smiles when he sees Fowler's struggles.
FROST
I don't blame you.
(reacts to Fowler's face)
You seem surprised I can talk.
(smiles)
You thought I was some kind of
monster? I can grunt and growl if
you like.
FOWLER
Why don't just kill me and get it
over with?
FROST
Are you that eager to die?
FOWLER
Of course not. But if there's no
way I'm gettin' outta here, why
drag it out -- unless it gives some
kind of sick thrill.
FROST
A thrill? Not at all. Killing is
the hard part.
FOWLER
You don't seem to have a problem
with it.
FROST
It's not the killing. It's the
hunger. It gives me...strength
beyond anything I've ever had. And
it's all I've ever known.
FOWLER
Eating human flesh has kept you
alive since the 1800's?
Frost laughs, amused.
FROST
My great grandparents have been
dead for a long time.
(sly grin)
We didn't eat all we captured. Not
immediately anyway.
FOWLER
You've got a pretty sick sense of
family buddy.
FROST
Better than what's going on down
there.
FOWLER
What're you talking about?
FROST
You've never felt it? The evil
that flows through Destiny?
Hmmm... doesn't matter to me. I'm
the last.
FOWLER
You never took a 'wife'?
FROST
Didn't want to force a woman to --
and my appearance. Let's just say
that the weather conditions and my
own evolution have made me less
than --
FOWLER
Human?
FROST
I was going to say 'desirable', but
I suppose I see your point.
FOWLER
Do you always talk to your food?
FROST
I must admit -- I do enjoy talking
to someone else once in a while.
But now I've got some work to
finish.
He picks up a large stack of cut meat.
FROST
Couple more trips to the fridge.
Frost carries another piece of Whitaker down the cave tunnel.
Now Fowler tries harder than ever to escape. He spots a
jagged piece of bone nearby and attempts to scoot over.
INT. BANKS' CAR - DAY
Banks drives up the narrow mountain road, scanning the trees.
She notices Jake plugging away at his computer.
BANKS
C'mon Jake, what're doing? Look
out your side for any sign of
Fowler.
JAKE
Just saving us a load of time. I
should have Agent Fowler located
here pretty quick.
BANKS
What? How?
JAKE
All the new cell phones have a GPS
chip installed -- most just don't
use them. I've got a program that
will activate the chip and we can
follow the signal and pinpoint his
location.
BANKS
You're kiddin' me. I don't know if
I'm relieved or scared that you can
do that. Anyone can do that?
JAKE
Well...yeah -- if you know how
to...hack...into a really secure
database.
BANKS
You're breaking the -- never mind,
I don't want to know. Do I?
JAKE
Probably not.
(looks at his laptop)
Okay, it looks like we've got a
signal. Let me plug it into an
aerial map.
(taps a few keys)
Are we on the north side of the
mountain?
BANKS
Yeah, why?
JAKE
He's close. Another couple of
miles up this way.
Banks speeds up, despite the icy roads.
INT. CAVE - EVENING
Fowler scoots over to the bone and backs up to it. He's able
to grab it with his hand and positions it against the rope.
He begins sawing through the rope with the bone. It's slow
going, but it's working. He hears movement further down and
quickly moves back to his original position and stops what
he's doing. Frost walks back through, giving a friendly
smile as he picks up the last of the meat.
FROST
Okay, almost done.
FOWLER
Then what?
FROST
Then it's your turn. Too bad
really. I kind of liked your
company.
He walks back out of the tunnel. Fowler continues to saw
away at his bonds.
EXT. FOREST - NIGHT
Darkness has fallen on the forest. A bright moon shines down
and reflects off the snow. Banks has parked her car
alongside the road. She and Jake get out.
JAKE
The signal's coming from that way.
I've got it synced up with my
phone.
Banks grabs two flashlights out of her car -- tosses one to
Jake.
BANKS
You're such a nerd. But I'm glad
you are.
JAKE
Do I need a gun or something?
Banks just looks him like 'are you kidding me'?
JAKE
Sorry, just thought I should ask.
I guess I'll just find a stick to
beat off the cannibal monster if he
attacks me.
BANKS
Keep being sarcastic, I'll shoot
you in the leg and leave you as a
sacrifice.
They trudge through shin deep snow as they head deeper into
the woods.
INT. CAVE - NIGHT
Fowler still saws away at his ropes until they finally snap
apart. Springing into action, he quickly frees his legs and
scouts around the chamber for a weapon, but he doesn't find
anything. Giving up, he heads out of the chamber.
INT. CAVE TUNNEL - CONTINUOUS
Narrow and claustrophobic, Fowler makes his way down the
dimly lit tunnel. Occasional bits of dried blood decorate
the walls, making him feel even more uncomfortable. He comes
to a cross junction, with several tunnels leading off into
different directions. He's about to head down one when he
hears Frost coming again.
He quickly goes partially down another tunnel and flattens
himself against the wall, concealing himself in the darkness.
Frost walks out of the opposite tunnel and stops at the
junction -- cocks his head like he heard something. Finally
he enters the tunnel Fowler just came out of. As soon as
he's gone, Fowler hurries down the tunnel Frost just exited.
INT. STORAGE CHAMBER - CAVE - CONTINUOUS
Fowler enters a smaller chamber that has been made over into
a refrigerator of sorts. It's packed full of snow and large
slabs of human meat line the wall. He's just taking it all
in when in the distance he hears Frost YELL in anger.
FROST (O.S.)
NOW YOU'VE REALLY PISSED ME OFF!
Fowler quickly looks for a hiding spot. A good one does not
present itself. He's trapped.
EXT. ROCKY OUTCROPPING - FOREST - NIGHT
Banks and Jake walk alongside a ridge with large rocks and
crevices on the side.
JAKE
We're close.
BANKS
(calling out)
Fowler? Fowler? Ben?
The only answer is the soft chilly breeze that blows through.
BANKS
How close Jake?
JAKE
Less than fifteen feet. Just
around this next corner.
As they hurry around the corner, Banks looks defeated when
she sees Fowler's cell phone laying in the snow.
BANKS
Damn it!
JAKE
No -- this isn't good.
He picks up the phone -- looks over at a nearby rock where he
spots a red stain.
JAKE
There's blood.
BANKS
C'mon. We've got to keep looking.
He might be close.
They trek on up the path.
INT. STORAGE CHAMBER - CAVE - NIGHT
Frost stealthily enters the chamber with a long, wicked
looking carving knife.
FROST
Are ya in here, rabbit?
He scans the room. Doesn't see any apparent sign of Fowler.
He waits, being perfectly quiet, but still doesn't detect
anything. Finally, he exits the chamber. After a moment,
several of the meat stacks MOVE. Fowler rolls out from
behind them, cold and shivering. He checks the corridor,
doesn't see or hear anything. After a moment, he enters the
tunnel.
INT. CAVE TUNNEL - CONTINUOUS
Fowler slowly moves down the tunnel, taking every step
carefully. So far, he doesn't see anything.
ANGLE ON FOWLER FROM BELOW
As Fowler walks, he doesn't see as Frost lays suspended on
the ceiling above. As Fowler passes by, Frost leaps down on
top of Fowler. Everything goes BLACK.
EXT. MOUNTAINSIDE - NIGHT
Banks continues to walk along the trail with Jake close
behind.
BANKS
(calling out)
Ben? Ben Fowler?
Again there is only the wind to answer her.
BANKS
FOWWWWWLLLLEEEERRRR!
INT. CAVE - CONTINUOUS
As Frost lays an unconscious Fowler on the cutting slab, he
can faintly hear Banks' voice float down the tunnel. With a
SNARL, he disappears back into the tunnel.
EXT. MOUNTAINSIDE - CONTINUOUS
Banks looks in every direction helplessly.
BANKS
I don't know where to look next.
It all looks the same.
Jake scans the area, then his eyes squint against the moon's
light.
JAKE
Is that...smoke?
BANKS
Where?
JAKE
Over there. On the other side of
the hill.
Banks struggles to see, but then spots it.
BANKS
Come on.
EXT. CAVE ENTRANCE - MOMENTS LATER
The thin trail of smoke trickles out of the entrance as Banks
and Jake reach it. Banks immediately senses danger and draws
her gun.
BANKS
Stay out here.
JAKE
Uhhh...no. I'm staying near the
gun.
Not wanting to argue, Banks enters the cave with Jake close
behind.
INT. MAIN CAVE TUNNEL - CONTINUOUS
Filled with icy stalagmites, Banks shines her flashlight beam
on the walls and finds crude drawings scratched into it.
BANKS
Oh my God. I think the Waldens
lived here.
JAKE
Maybe they still do.
They hear a noise further down the tunnel. Rocks shuffling.
Banks raises her gun and continues down the corridor. She
shines the light ahead, but can't see very far.
They pass an wall completely coated in ice and Banks scans it
quickly. Seeing nothing, she moves forward. But suddenly
something behind the wall moves! Frost smashes through the
wall and grabs Banks, throwing her to the ground. Her gun
spins out of her hand and slides well out of her reach.
Jake rushes forward to help, but Frost quickly lashes out
with his talons and swipes Jake across the chest. Jake falls
back against the wall, blood oozing out from his hand where
he clutches his chest.
FROST
Wait your turn boy!
Banks tries to free herself, but Frost overpowers her,
leaning over her, unable to control the drool coming out of
his mouth.
FROST
Been a long time since I've had a
woman. Don't get many of them out
in the woods by themselves.
BANKS
LET - ME - GO!
FROST
I think I'll start with your
kidneys. They're quite good
roasted over an open flame.
He licks the side of her face, leaving a vile trail of slime.
He rears up, about to strike again when WHAM!
Fowler, holding Banks' flashlight knocks Frost out cold with
a good whack to the head. As soon as Frost is out, he
stumbles to his knees, still woozy.
BANKS
Fowler!
In spite of herself, she hugs him. Then she turns to Jake.
BANKS
You all right?
JAKE
I'll live.
They look at the still body of Frost, still not understanding
him.
EXT. MOUNTAIN ROAD - NIGHT
A large police transport truck has its flashers on and Frost
sits inside, handcuffed. He stares straight at Banks,
licking his lips.
Paramedics tend to Fowler and Jake and Banks sits on the back
of the ambulance, her hands bandaged.
BANKS
Hard to believe that family was
living up here all this time.
FOWLER
He actually thought it was a better
place to live, then Destiny. He
called it evil.
JAKE
I'm starting to think that might be
true.
FINNEAS GRIMM (Robert Englund) walks around the rocky corner,
coming from the cave.
GRIMM
Quite a mess back there. Gonna
take a while to sort it all out. A
ton of bones.
He sees Jake take the amulet out of his pocket and look at
it, just to keep busy.
GRIMM
Whatcha got there?
JAKE
Just something I found.
GRIMM
Looks valuable. Better hang on to
it.
Jake slides it back into his pocket. Grimm turns to Fowler.
GRIMM
Wanna ride back to town?
FOWLER
Not on your life.
GRIMM
Suit yourself.
He waddles back to the crime scene.
EXT. CAVE ENTRANCE - MOMENTS LATER
When Grimm is alone, he takes out his cell phone, dials and
waits.
GRIMM
The amulet has been found.
