Gathering the Masses

So, I have given you the first two tutorials, but those still aren't enough? Well, there is one more thing I can think of except deleting the files you don't want (you could also burn them onto a CD, which can hold more and then delete them from your computer). Anyways, the one more thing I know of doing is called Disk or System Defragmenting. What this does is - when you use your computer, you do things, create things, delete things, etc. When you do this, it leaves little spaces of free space all over your hard drive. But they are too small to use on their own. What the Disk Defragmenter does is combine all those pieces of free space and make one big section of free space on your computer. Sound good? Ok, let's get started.

You're going to want to do this like overnight or something when you can leave your computer alone for a long time. Because this does take quite a long time. So what you want to do now is...:

  • Close all your open windows and get your computer ready to be left alone for a while
  • now for Windows XP you want to go to:
  • Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter
  • Now click on "Analyze" and it will give you a prediction of your free space (white), fragmented space (red), contiguous files (blue and don't ask me what this is I don't know), and unmovable files (green). I think all of them are pretty self-explanitory.
  • Once it is finished analyzing, click on "Defragment" and then just let it go until it finishes. This would probably be a good time to go and enjoy some quality time with your friends (or game system, I din't know.)

If you have any questions about this tutorial, please feel free to contact me in the "Find" contact page, here.
