Fig jam cottage is a typical Kastellorizo village house, that we purchased as a ruin back in 2005.

We  started work on the project a year later. We completed the vast majority of the rebuilding work ourselves, bar the roof, windows and doors that were made by our friend Vassili  the carpenter and the wall rendering that was subcontracted to a local plasterer.

The renovation project was completed by the summer of 2008.

The name "Fig Jam Cottage" comes from my first visit in Kastellorizo back in 1980. At that time, we had compensated for the lack of supplies in the single village shop by picking a large amount figs from the many trees growing wild amongst the ruined houses. Of course we did pick far too much, and ended up with a pressure cooker full of fig jam.  It is our friend Michael, then skipper of the sailboat we were cruising on at the time that cornered the name.  The green shutters and doors are coincidental (and also a bit accidental).

The following pages should give an idea of what our house is all about.
