This XR2 appeared for sale on Ebay in February 2004. At the time I couldn't verify the registration plate.
It was described as a T-bar conversion and was apparently commisioned by Ford, along with five others. The car was only MOT'd until Feb 04 and would need some TLC before another was issued.
In September 2005 I was at a car show in Norwich with my Mk2 convertible C457 XDU where I met a gentleman called Richard. He said he'd just bought a Mk1 XR2 with a T-bar convertible conversion, and that it had an opening boot like mine. To the best of my knowledge Rugby Autocar who built my car never built an mk1's so I was rather confused.
Having now received these pics from Richard its certainly not a Rugby Autocar or Fly conversion. Richard reckons these were commissioned by Ford for a promotion, we know not what.
This makes me wonder if there might be some truth in the theory put forward by a previous owner of
FCM 444Y who remembered talking to a lady who'd won a Fiesta XR2 convertible in a competition run by a major food company (possibly Heinz). We might never know
