Final Fantasy XI Battle System

The battle system of FFXI is much different than those of past Final Fantasy games. One of the major differences is that the battles are now real time. You can see all the enemies on the wondering around on the screen before you begin a battle with them.

Determining an Enemy

When you want to battle an enemy, first, if you have never fought that enemy before, you should use the "Determine" command. When you use the determine command, you recieve a breif description of the monster. If you think you are good enough to fight that enemy, then you should target it.

Targeting

You can target enemies, NPCs, and other players by pressing the circle button. If you have targeted the wrong enemy, then you can change targets by pressing left and right on the D-pad.

Action Window

If you press circle again, an "Action Window" will appear. You can now choose the "Attack" command.

Attack Commands

Now you have the choice to use "Auto Attack", which automaticly attacks the enemy in a time based made. Once you are in "Auto Battle", the only ways to exit are to win the battle or to cancle the battle by selecting "Cancle Battle".

Using Magic

To use magic in a battle, select the "Magic" command from the "Action Window". Magic takes a certain amount of time to cast, and if you are hit or if you move it will be canceled. Then you can choose the spell you want to use.

Item Command

You can also use certain items in a battle. Like magic, items take time to use.

Battle too Tough?

If the battle becomes to overwhelming, you can choose to cancel the battle. When this is done, you can choose "Help Needed", which warns others around you that you need help, or you can choose to flee by simply pressing L3 to deactivate the target lock and then running away from the enemy.
