One of the aspects of Final Fantasy that is vastly different than any other FF relased in North America is that the characters do not have predefined identities.  While this does free a player up as to how his or her party is going to progress, it limits the story and eliminates any kind of character development.

Fighter:  As the name suggests, this is the strongest fighter in the game.  The fighter can use all of the weapons in the game, making him a little expensive to equip.  Just got some class change pics, and he turns into the Knight.
Theif:  The theif begins the game with the most agility, making him a harder target to hit than most.  He can equip a fair amount of the games arsenal, but he's still a relatively weak fighter.  At class change, the theif becomes the dark and mysterious Ninja (only not so dark or mysterious).
Black Belt:  The black belt starts off relatively weak, but can progress to be the most deadly character in the game, hands down.  He's also pretty inexpensive to equip, because he can fight without the benefit of weapons quite well.  Going up a class?  You'll find the Grand Master.
Red Mage:  The red mage is probably the most versatile character in the game.  He's a decent fighter, but he can also use white and black magic.  A party with three red mages can cut through the game like Excaliber through an Imp.  A player will welcome the Red Wizard at class change.
Characters
White Mage:  Ah, the lovers of peace, harmony, and healing.  Invaluable when a party treks into some deep dungeon with who knows what kind of baddies around every turn.  Magic gets expensive, but since the white mage won't be needing many of those bothersome weapons, it doesn't matter too much.  Class change?  You guessed it:  White Wizard.
Black Mage:  Death and destruction rains from the sky!  Despite being a total wimp with any kind of weapon, the black mage can absolutely fry enemies.  And just think, with all that magic he can put on one hell of a fireworks show.  Going up, second floor:  Black Wizards and lengerie (don't ask).
