Gay Parents Demand
Straight Child
San Francisco-Gay couple John Demoe and Rich Gwindle have demanded that the child they adopt be heterosexual.
"We don’t want some faggot kid living with us," says Gwindle, who became Demoe’s legal common-law partner only three weeks ago. "It’s a sad testament to the level of morality in this country when even homosexual children are allowed to be adopted."
The demand is being backed by the National Organisation for Gays Advocating Youth Straightness, who works on behalf of homosexual common-law partnerships to ensure that only the straightest children become available for adoption. A spokesperson for NOGAYS stated that "it is unconstitutional to not allow freedom of choice to gay couples looking to adopt children."
Demoe and Gwindle are optimistic that their requests will be met, and as Demoe puts it, "how can a moral and responsible society exist without guidelines on who can be adopted?" He later added, "besides, we’re only looking out for the kid’s best interest. A gay kid would get teased at school, so at least by adopting a straight child, we can avoid the embarrassment he would experience for being homosexual."
If the couple’s desires are fulfilled, it would nix the hopes of nine-year-old Billy Edwards, gay, being adopted. "I was really looking forward to joining [John] and [Rich]’s partnership. It would have been nice to live together. But now, this fascist government won’t even allow us queer children to go live with gay people."
"I certainly hope that these peoples’ requests are not satisfied," says Laura Forstein, child psychologist. "After all, how will these children make it as a gay in this hetero-centric world without some positive reinforcement from two male role models."
