| Bush Ghost - a story of lonely, inarticulate, angry characters, this novel was doomed when I grew tired of lonely, inarticulate, angry characters. While I assure you it was going to end happily, I simply couldn't bring myself to write something so dreadfully serious in tone, and adding humor to such a story is as easy as making a squirrel perform kabuki on cue. And so its first chapter rests here, mocking me and my weakness for robots and rubber chickens. | ||||||||
| Silently Southward - if ever you should find yourself at a loss to explain to your friends and loved ones what it is you do or why you do it, do not under any circumstances then tell them that you write stories of animals. There will be strange, quizzical, and/or dismissive looks or silences, or worse still, enthusiasm at your decision to write "children's" books, as though the world needed more of that tripe. Some such friends wanted me to read aloud some of my animal fiction, but it's always infernally frustrating to read for someone a chapter, and then be faced with myriad questions about it missing parts. Since I am as unable to write a short story as I am unable to pull a camel out of my boxers, I decided to pull a couple of encounters out of the novel and work them together as a sort of self-contained excerpt.
