| The "Yogis' Diet" is a way of eating that aims at maintaining energy for our body and sustaining clarity of our mind. It is not vegan, but is more than mere vegetarian diet. For Yogis, the idea of vegetarian diet primarily derives from a fundamental Yogic principle "Ahimsa", or non-violence. This is similar to the vegetarian diet in Buddhism. There are also many other reasons for Yogis to be vegetarians. I'll save you the details of Yogis' Diet's "why-is" before I share with you the "what-is". Please be kindly reminded that this really is the Yogis' diet in my mind. I eat this way because of my personal preference, physical condition and experiences, besides my belief in Ahimsa. I have seen many variations and theories about what we as yogis should or should not eat, and I certain do not wish to dogmatically claim that my way is the "correct way". I thus am more inclined to provide "choices". Just like in asanas, there can be modifications for diet, too. |

| I do have a few rules of thumb about my recipes: #101:This IS a vegetarian diet. 1)'Vegetarian" means not eating all animals; and I believe fish in included in the all animal category. 2) I do eat eggs. This I take the classical egg-eating vegetarians' argument that eating eggs is not equivalent to killing lives, because eggs are not embryos. 3) No alcohol. 4) No smoking (although this is not really a "diet"), and certainly no breathing second-hand smoke. 5) Onions, garlic, coffee, tea, fast foods: from a Yogic perspective these types of food are considered "rajasic", or overstimulating. They would disturb the balance or our mind and are thus not encouraged. I was born to dislike onion or garlic, and I am not a big fan of coffee (though I do drink tea), so you will see me avoiding these things in my recipes. Yet keep in mind this is optional. Got scared? Don't be! This is quite fun if you consider cooking with limitations as a challenge. Just go ahead and try a few recipes. Make creative variations, and enjoy your own YOGIS' RECIPES!! |
