Think Write Pair Share
Website Links
This active learning strategy is for use with the whole class, to engage all students in the thinking process, not just a few.  In this non-threatening environment, students are given time to think alone, and write down their elusive thoughts, take it to their buddy for feedback, then to small group before taking it to the whole class, where they can share an idea that might be theirs, or might be borrowed from a groupmate.  This gives all members of the class an opoprtunity to share their ideas, and the teacher a way to assess if all the students are comprehending.

1.  Have students take out their notebook and something to write with.

2.  Remind students who their
buddy is.

3.  Pose the question/activity.

4.  (THINK) Tell students:  "Take about 30 seconds to think about..."

5.  Pause for about 30 seconds, walk around the room, put your finger to your lips if students start talking, tap your temple to remind them they should be thinking.

6.  (WRITE)  Tell students:  "Now, take about 2 minutes to write down some of your thoughts.

7.  Allow students about 2 minutes (more or less depending on what you observe).  Walk the room, put your fingers to your lips if students start talking, mime writing with the pencil to remind students they should be writing.

8.  (PAIR AND THINK)  Tell students:  "Now, turn to your buddy and take 2 minutes to share what each of you have.  Ask questions and give suggestions to your buddy.  Remember, both of you should share."

9.  Allow students about 2 minutes (more or less depending on what you observe).  Walk the room, and remind students to talk with each other and ask questions if they are not participating.

10)  (WRITE)  Tell students:  "Now, take about 2 more minutes to add to what you already have written."

11)  Allow students about 2 minutes (more or less depending on what you observe.)  Walk the room, put your fingers to your lips if students start talking, mime writing with the pencil to remind students they shold be writing.

12.  Remind students who their
group is.

13)   (GROUP) Tell students:  "Now, turn to your group, and take 2 minutes to share what each of you have.  Ask questions, and give suggestions to your groupates.  Remember, all of you should share."

14)  Allow students about 2 minutes (more or less depending no what you observe).  Walk the room, and remind students to talk with each other and ask questions if they are not participating.

15)  (SHARE)  Tell students:  "Okay, it's time to share.  We need someone from each group to share an idean from the group."  Here, there are many
variations that can be used.  You could assign each group member a number, and say, "Alright, all of the 1's will need to share something from their group.  Let's start with this group here,"  and continue from there.
