1.  Have students take out their notebook and something to write with.

2.  Model on the overhead while students write in their notebooks.

3.  Create a four column chart (tell students to make it a two-page spread in their notebooks; two columns on one page,and two columns on the page facing it)

4.  Label the first column with a "K" for "Know", the second column with a "W" for "Want to know"m, the third column with an "L" for "Learned", and the fourth column with a "+" which will be for questions that are brought up from the topic, but not directly related.

5.  Use the "

6.  Use the "Think write pair think write group share" technique here to have students complete the "W" column.

7.  Use the "Think write pair think write group share" technique here to have students complete the "+" column.

8.  Tell students they will complete the "L" column as they begin their studies.
