| September 2, 2003 Welcome back to school! If you completed the summer homework, be sure to submit that for credit! Daily supplies necessary for Fall Semester 2003 include: --Two (2) sewn composition books (the kind that usually comes with a marble cover). If you like, you can purchase them from me for $1/each (while supplies last). --One package (100) index cards (use a rubberband, ziploc bag, etc. for keeping them together) --Two (2) pencils (with lead if you are using mechanical pencils). If you like, you can purchase non-mechanical pencils from me for 10 cents each. --One (1) black or blue ink pen (if you like, you can purchase them for 50 cents from me). --Two (2) rubberbands will be provided for use with the composition books (one per book). If the rubberbands are used inappropriately, Saturday School will be assigned (per village policy). **Supply checks will be conducted at random. Individual and/or class points will be given when all supplies are readily available. --Other supplies that will be helpful for class include: straightedges, colored pencils, water-based markers, scissors, hole punchers, and white-out. Weekly homework: --Due every Wednesday --Language Arts: (1) Write the spelling words ten times each, (2) Write the rhyme/chant five times, and (3) Write the morphemes and definitions ten times each. (The best way would be to choose five days of the week to write the spelling words two times, the rhyme/chant one time, and the morphemes and definitions two times. This will give you practice time everyday, and studies show that if you practice everyday, it will stay in your long-term memory more efficiently). --American Studies: Write the who, what, where, when, why, how, source, and significance of one current event every week. The source shall be either television news, radio news, newspaper, news or newspaper website (www.cbs.org, www.davisenterprise.com,etc.), or news magazine (Newsweek, etc.) Classroom policies: --Water bottles, or clear-carbonated drinks (Sprite, flavored sparkling water) are allowed --Healthy snacks (fruit, vegetables, crackers) are allowed --Inaudible-to-non-user headphones are allowed during independent working time --Disruptive and disrespectful students will be assigned detention and a phone call home Grading: --5-point system: 5= Outstanding! ; 4= better than minimal; 3= minimal requirements met; 2= below minimal requirements; 1= attempt at assignment; 0= no work submitted. --Larger assignments and quizzes/tests will count for a minimum of double credit. --The highest score that late work can receive is a 3, unless prior arrangements have been made, or there are extenuating circumstances. --This transfers to the following letter grades and percentages (please note that these differ from other teachers? scales, due to the use of the 5-point system): 95+ (A+); 86-94 (A); 81-85 (A-); 75-80 (B); 66-74 (B); 61-65 (B-); 55-60 (C+); 46-54 (C); 41-45 (C-); 35-40 (D+); 26-34 (D); 20-25 (D-); 0-19 (F) Extra help: --By appointment ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Detach and return this bottom portion to Mrs. Samson Student Name ___________________________ Read-aloud book suggestion ___________________ ___ Yes!
