During the hot summer there is no better place than Sudwerk's Beer Garden. Voted annually the best patio in the Central Valley. Our large beautifully landscaped patio offers some sun, large shaded tables for groups or a quiet corner to enjoy your beer, the breeze and a book.
Sudwerk was established in April 1990 bringing a feel of Bavaria to the craft brewing industry. As microbrewers were focusing on production of ales, due to the reduced start-up capital, production costs and shorter production times, Sudwerk concentrated on more costly, more time consuming Germanic Lager styles. Although the vast majority of beers produced around the world are lager beers, few American craft brewers are brewing lagers.

At Sudwerk, we adhere to the Reinheitsgebot German Purity Law of 1516, stating that only water, malt, hops and yeast be used. We use the highest quality ingredients available. The purest water, imported speciality malts from England and Germany, Hallertau and Tettnang hops from the world's greatest growing regions, Weinenstephan yeast from Germany's oldest brewery.

FC Sudwerk is a co-ed team that plays in the deceptively harmless sounding -- yet quite competitive -- Davis Adult Recreational Soccer League (DARSL). The club combines two of my passions: playing soccer and socializing over good beer.
Naturally, when I decided I would try to get together a team (what was I thinking!), the first thing I did was pay a visit to my favorite brewery, Sudwerk. Ron Broward, the owner at the time, welcomed the idea of sponsoring a soccer team. His successor, Tim McDonnell, has continued to provide great support. Thanks a million for all your assistance!

Fc Sudwerk got off to a rocky start in a fall 2001 indoor soccer league. But week by week, we improved and slowly melded into a team that enjoyed gathering for beer as much as passing well and scoring goals. That's what FC Sudwerk strives for: teamwork and the camaraderie and joy that comes with it. The following spring, we joined DARSL. We've had lots of ups and downs as one of the league's bottom-half-of-the-table teams, but it has been rewarding, at times amusing and definitely entertaining!
Sudwerk resembles a large German beer hall, with copper kettles as the center piece of the bar, open fermenting vessels, antique brewing equipment and large booths that fit up to 10 people. There are two TV's in the bar area and live music on weekends. Our menu offers something for everyone, from sausages and other traditional German favorites to Chinese chicken salad and sandwiches.

I can't tell you how many times I've said I'm done with this team -- done playing, done helping to run it. Like my love for the game of soccer, it endures against all odds. Everytime I throw up my hands, someone else comes to the rescue. Thanks to everybody, this club is currently in its 33rd consecutive season and is an institution unto itself. Special thanks to Culien Ortiz and Max Simmons, who stepped up to lead the team in 2008 and have done a terrific job continuing the tradition.
