First Church of God, formerly known as Brooklyn Church of God was Founded by the Late. Rev. Mathai. P. Mathai. After his arrival in the United States in August of 1973, one of Rev. Mathai's Goals was to form a church under the leadership of Church of God. Thru the help of the Lord and fellow believers this goal was made possible. The Church originated on Vanderbilt Ave in Brooklyn NY as one of the oldest Malayalee Pentecostal Churches in the United States. When the Church started in the early days there were only a handful of members to worship the Lord. As the years went on the Lord added many new souls to the Church. Through God's grace new churches were formed through the leadership of Brooklyn Church of God. Many great servants of God also received the training they needed to win souls for the Lord through their fellowship at Brooklyn Church of God. As the Church grew, it was also one of Rev. Mathai's dreams to buy a new building for the Church and move toward the regions of Queens or Elmont, NY. Although he started this great task he was not able to see his dream come alive.
Rev. Mathai. P. Mathai served as the Pastor of Brooklyn Church of God until his last days. He had the opportunity to win many souls for the Lord in various parts of the country and the world. He also served in different positions of various organizations throughout his lifetime, his last being the Local Coordinator of the Pentecostal Conference of North American Keralites in Syracuse, New York from September 1992 to January 1993.
While on a trip to his homeland on February 2, 1993, the Lord called Rev. Mathai. P. Mathai to leave his earthly home for the heavenly place that the Lord had prepared for him. Though unexpected, it was taken by the the church members, as Lord's will at the Lord's time.
After his departure the Church promised to make alive the dream that was started by Rev. Mathai. By God's Grace we were able to purchase a commercial office building in Elmont, NY. But hardships followed in making the office building into a Church where the Lord's name can be exalted. These included hardships mostly from the neighbors and the various parties involved in getting the Church permit for the building. At last the Lord helped us to overcome all obstacles and we began to worship the Lord in Elmont. The name of the Church was renamed to First Church of God appropriately
On November 1, 1997 at 10:00 AM Rev. Joseph Mirkovich dedicated the temple to the Lord and his Glory. This event was attended by many believers and pastors from around the country. In everyone's heart was the memory of Rev. Mathai and his dream becoming alive.
At present we are located at 657 Meacham Ave, in Elmont NY. Our Church is pastored by Rev. Moni Mathew. We provide our Church members with the spiritual nourishment for the everyday life. We offer a variety of activities that will enable you to go forward in your heavenly walk.
Come join us to worship the Lord in Truth and Spirit.
