Weeds

What is a weed?

A weed is any plant growing in cultivated ground to the injury of the crop or desired vegetation, or to the disfigurement of the place; an unsightly, useless, or injurious plant. Whatever plants grow among corn or grass, in hedges, or elsewhere, and are useless to man, injurious to crops, or unsightly or out of place, are denominated weeds.

Some examples of weeds:

-- A flower in a patch of grass, or some grass in flowers.

-- Oats in a wheat field.

-- Grass growing in a sweetcane field.

-- Numbweed growing in an orchard.

What makes weeds so weedy?

Weeds seem to be equipped with many ways of making sure they propagate, or reproduce. There are many ways they do this. Below there are examples showing how weeds do this.

--Animals can transport seeds when they eat them or when seeds stick to their fur.

--The wind can blow seeds around.

--Most weeds are very hardy, and seem to survive in many different areas and under many adverse conditions.
