Runner Care

Runners need to be groomed exercised and fed reqularly.

Grooming needs to be done before and after exercising as well as other times. Normal brush for bigger knots and finer-tooth combs for smaller ones. Carefully check and pick hooves with a hoof-pick and use wider combs or brushes for manes and tails.

Runners need to be mounted from the left side though normally one tacks him/her first. Be gentle with bridle and don't force the bit as that could hurt the runner. Saddle blanket goes on before saddle and can be folded, make sure it's centered then carefully put saddle on and do up straps doing up the one round runners middle whilst it's inhaling or it may be too loose/tight.

Squeeze flanks to move runner forward gently but not too gently, takes a fair bit to hurt a runner there. When wanting to stop pull back on reins though only briefly and not too hard, to turn pull the rein of the direction you want to turn and keep runners head even while riding. Sit up in the saddle with you're head looking in the direction of the runners along his/her head, don't sit too tightly or too loosely.

Runners eat lots of different things from grass to hay and oats. They also enjoy redfruit and fingeroot snacks as well as other treats as well and a varied diet is good though sticking mostly to the basics is best as too many treats can be harmful. If you're not sure if something's okay for a runner to eat it probably isn't.
