Kayaking Florida

Kayaking can be an awesome experience. It's the chance to go to places which are not easily explored. My Little Paradise Island

Windchimes in the breeze

These pictures were all taken in the Gulf in the Sarasota and Tampa Bay area. I'll hopefully have more posted of the waterfront - just have been enjoying it too much to take lots of pictures.

The Sun Setting Over Tampa Bay

Here's a gorgeous sunset. Oh, did I mention that at this point I realized I was in the middle of the blasted channel with no lights and still had an hour to get back to land? The time does fly but unfortunately - kayaking is a slow and steady sport so try to time things right or you might get stuck because of a tide.

Here are some rules for kayaking that you should always keep in mind if you're going to hit the water:

  1. Always make sure you have a life preserver onboard. No boat is infallible. Stowing your life preserver is a no no. Strap it to the outside or you'll get fined by the local marine patrol.
  2. Never go out after dark without a flashing light. Remember, the Archie comics books are FICTION. This means that the big boats will do more than just break your kayak in half.
  3. Keep a waterproof camera with you at all times. You'll hate yourself if you miss that important shot. You'll miss it anyway, but at least you tried.
  4. Make sure you carry suntan lotion, the sea water washes it off after about 2 hours. This is not a joke!! If you like looking like a baked lobster - this rule doesn't apply to you.
  5. Last of all, but not least - Don't forget to have a tie on your paddle. They tend to drift faster than you'd think. Also, this speed rule applies to the boat as well. Stay with your boat!

Here's there be dolphins. As you can see they really aren't all that afraid of my kayak.

Looks like he's as curious about me as I'm about him.
