InuYasha (literally 'Dog Demon' in Japanese) is an anime/manga set briefly in modern times, but mostly in the Warring States era of Japan. I'm too lazy to look up the exact dates, but it was in the 15th/16th centuries. A story by Rumiko Takahashi, easily one of my favorite manga artists, it is like many of her works very character-heavy. The two main characters initially are a half human/half white wolf demon called simply Inu Yasha, and schoolgirl from modern day Japan named Kagome. This schoolgirl lives on a shrine her grandfather owns that has a mysterious well on the grounds. One day, in climbing down it to look for her cat, she somehow falls through and is attacked by a demon between two worlds. When she had returned to the well, she had travelled back in time nearly 500 years! Here she released Inu Yasha who had been bound to a tree by a priestess Kikyo, when Inu Yasha attempted to take the "Shikon Jewel", the Jewel of Four Souls. This jewel had been destroyed with Kikyo's body when she died, but it had remanifested itself in Kagome's body, marking her the reincarnation of Kikyo (along with getting some priesty powers). The jewel fell out when Kagome got a gash from the same demon she was attacked by between worlds, and after being stolen, was broken into hundreds of pieces that scattered all over the land. Inu Yasha and Kagome then join together to hunt down the shards of the jewel. Along the way, they meet in order Myouga, a flea demon that was a sort of advisor to InuYasha's father and is now loyal to him, then, Shippo, a kitsune-oni (fox demon) that is a master of trickery, Miroku, a lecherous monk who has a mysterious magical hole in his hand that can suck in everything around him and utterly destroy it, and Sango the demon-hunter (she's hot).
This is not to say there are no 'villains'. Sesshoumaru, Inu Yasha's half brother (by way of the same father), despises Inu Yasha for being half-human, but most of the tension between them arises over the sword 'Tetsusaiga', a rusty old sword that turns into a gigantic incredibly powerful sword when humans are being protected with it. It was forged with one of their father's own fangs, and they could never figure out who he meant it to be for. There is also Kikyo, the woman Inu Yasha once loved and who ended up binding him to the tree for trying to steal the jewel, she was revived and so becomes an odd sort of character later on (it's hard to explain anything without giving it away...)Aside from that, there is Naraku, an absolutely vicious demon that seems to have done something wrong to everyone. He seeks the jewel shards for himself (as many demons do), but there's also a revenging/avenging thing going on with him because he's so naughty.
