The Rotary Youth Exchange Program is an exchange program for high school students, typically between 16 and 18, to spend one year living abroad. They send over 8,000 students out annually, from and to dozens of countries around the world. Rotary clubs from the outgoing students' areas organize the exchanges, with one outgoing student for every incoming student hosted. The offer an amazing support group for the students; there are interview selections, orientations before departure and after arrival(in most cases), contact Rotarians in both countries involved, and much more.
I personally have made lifelong friends and contacts through my involvement with this program. I would do a thousand more exchanges if it were only possible. I now have an additional three families, making my total the following: 4 moms, 4 dads, 1 sister, 4 brothers, and coutless extended family members. I now have a working ability in three languages, and a thirst for new adventures and travel that inspires me constantly. I like to think that my year spent abroad was the greatest I have had so far in my admittedly short life, and the positive effects continue. I wouldn't give up my experience for the world.
Thank-you to all the Rotarians and other who helped me a long the way.
For more information on the program in general, see here.
Check out here for my journal from Japan until I get everything organized properly.
