![]() Capt. Christopher F. Soelzer, 26 years old from South Dakota.
Christopher was one of the rare ones. Dave Mueller, a fellow classmate who played high school football with Chris in Sturgis, S.D said, "I think he was close to straight A's. To be honest, he was real quiet, real shy, except to some of his friends. He was also a person who, you'd barely have to know him and he'd do everything for you. He was just a real nice guy." After graduating high school, Chris earned a scholarship to attend Kemper Military School in Boonville, Mo. He later enrolled at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, where he received a degree in chemical engineering. Chris enlisted in the Army and was assigned to the 5th Engineer Battalion, 1st Engineer Brigade based out of Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Capt. Soelzer was killed on December 24, 2003 while in a vehicle that was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED). A homemade bomb blew up as they traveled in a convoy near Samarra, north of Baghdad. Capt. Soelzer's brother, Josh - 25 years old was also serving in Iraq. =============================================
"I love you big brother. I miss you just as much today as when you left us."
"I was flipping through our "97" Kemper Crest and came across a signing from you. You wrote "SFC Araiz, Good Luck at your next school and duty station. It has truly been a pleasure working with you." Chris you were always thoughtful of others, you placed the needs of others before yourself, you could always be counted on, and most importantly you are respected and loved by all who knew you. I do truly miss you."
"I miss you chris. Looking back, I realize that I often took for granted your constant good advice and your strong arm of comfort! I'm sorry... I wish more than anything i could tell you how much that always meant to me. I wish even more that you were here today to do the same. My heart misses you so much... it always has."
"I remember that Thanksgiving break our freshman year when you came with me and Schwartz back to Alabama. You were so out of your element and far from what you were use to,but in true chris style you opened your mind and your heart and we all had a great time. My only regret is that after I left Kemper we didn't keep in touch but I never forgot about you or the fun we all had. I miss you big guy."
"I think of the times we'd run into each other during a gaurd drill, or walking between classes at Tech. You always gave me great advice for both college and the military. After the deployment I finished my enlistment and couldn't find enough reasons to stay in. I'm sure if you were around you would have enlightened me with some! I am very fortunate to have known you and your family. I just want you to know you are a true hero. You are thought of all of the time. I'll see you someday again.." |
