Fallen Heroes

Spc. Anthony O. Cardinal

Spc. Anthony O. Cardinal - 20 years old from Muskegon, Michigan.

Anthony (Tony) is a 2003 graduate from Oakride High School in Muskegon. His wife, Amber graduated in 2004.

Anthony joined the Army shortly before the arrival of their first baby due to a shortage of jobs in the Muskegon area.
He was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division based out of Fort Stewart, GA.

His mother, Maria Cardinal said, "He was always very responsible. He seemed to grow up fast, but he was always joking. He sat around the dinner table and kept everyone entertained."

While Spc. Cardinal was in Iraq, him and his wife kept in contact through e-mail almost every day. Electronic connections also helped the couple be together for a very big occasion such as the birth of their second child, Mayless in October (2004).
"They brought a satellite phone to him so he could call me." Said Amber.

Anthony also got to see the baby by Web cam, but never in person. "Amber and the kids meant the world to him. He always put them first. He was a wonderful husband and a good father."

Amber and their two children had moved to Fort Stewart not to long before Anthony was to return home. Her family also is back in Michigan.

The closer his Jan. 5 homecoming got, the more his anxiety grew. "He mentioned to me that he's more afraid of dying now more then ever, because he was so close to coming home." Tells Amber.

The last she heard from him was from a email on Christmas Eve telling her that he had two missions that day. He had spent nearly a year in Iraq and was to spend the rest of his two-year enlistment in Georgia.
Spc. Cardinal was killed on December 25, 2005 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during combat operations in Baghdad. He was killed less than two weeks before he was due home.

Two soldiers came to his wife's door in Fort Stewart on Christmas and told her he had died earlier in the day. His death hadn't been officially announced by the Pentagon.
At the time, Amber didn't knowk the circumstances of her husband's death.

Amber stated that her husband came to love the military and wanted to make a career out of it.
"He was really dedicated to his job. He said they were getting things done over there."

After being told of Spc. Cardinal's death, Amber decided to move back home to Michigan. "I'm coming home as soon as possible. It's too hard being here now." She said.

He is survived by his family, his wife Amber and their two kids Mikel and Maylee.
Amber's uncle Gerald Toma said, "He was a truly great guy. He was great with the kids and made everyone laugh. Just all around you couldn't ask for a nicer person."
