Here you will find resources for the world's most
popular arcade game emulator - MAME. MAME is an emulator capable of
playing over 3229 classic, and even some not so classic arcade
games! MAME even runs Neo Geo games, which can be considered arcade or
console, depending on what you prefer.
MAME is an emulator. It reproduces, more or less
faithfully, the behaviour of various arcade machines. But hardware is
useless without software, so images (files) of the ROMs which run on that
hardware are required. Such ROMs, like all commercial software, are
copyrighted. Therefore, it is illegal to possess a ROM image file if you
do not own the original ROM. Needless to say, ROMs are not distributed
together with MAME. Distribution of MAME with ROM images is a violation of
copyright law and a violation of the MAME license, and it should be
promptly reported to the authors so that appropriate legal action can be
taken.
MAME was originally started in January 1997, by Nicola
Salmoria. Originally, Nicola developed single emulators for individual
games, such as Lady Bug, Mr. Do!, Pengo, and a multiple game emulator of
the various early Pac Man games. A month later, Nicola decided to combine
the emulators into a multiple game emulator format, which is now known
world wide as MAME. Today, there are well over 100 people contributing to
the MAME project.
