Membership
The monthly newsletter, published throughout the year, includes information on workshops, opportunities to enter shows, contact information of members, details of upcoming programs, events, and demos, recognition of members' accomplishments, art tip, items for sale, and more. The newsletter can be received via e-mail or regular mail, and will be archived on the FWS web site.
Our meetings start with a short social time from 6:30 - 7:00 pm before the offical meeting starts, and usually include some great refreshments from members. Then any business or upcoming events are discussed in a casual and efficient manner. Most meetings include an educational component: a guest speaker, demo, or lesson relating to painting, new materials, marketing, photographing artwork, etc. The meetings usually last 2 hours, and are held in the Blue Room, 3rd floor in Centennial Hall, Pioneer Park, in Fairbanks.
Saturday paintouts are often held the Saturday after the regular meetings and provide an opportunity for members to paint together and share ideas and techniques. Locations and times vary from month to month, and are announced in the newsletters and at the meetings.
Several other paintouts are organized throughout the year as the opportunities arise. There is usually a Labor Day paintout in the fall to take advantage of the beautiful fall colors in settings around the Interior--Maclaren River Lodge on Denali Hwy or Circle Hot Springs Resort for example. These are usually planned and announced a month or more in advance.
One or more workshops are offered each year, with accomplished local, regional and national instructors. These special events, which are open to the public, are advertised first to members. This is an important benefit as workshops have a limited enrollment. Workshops are usually open to all skill levels--beginner to advanced.
A lending library of art related video tapes, books, and other media is available for check out to members. This library allows members to explore new techniques and ideas without having to invest in expensive materials themselves.
Members are allowed to enter the FWS annual show held each year in early March at New Horizons Gallery in Fairbanks. Assistance is provided in planning, critiquing art, and other preparations for the show.
Members are able to sign up for exhibiting and selling their art work at several locations during the year, including:
The only criteria for membership is an interest in watercolor! Members of all skills levels are welcome to come, listen, learn, socialize, and appreciate art in general and watercolor in particular.
Because our membership is growing nicely, and to make it more manageable, from our December 2006 meeting on, we are going to have a yearly dues due date of January 1st instead of your anniversary date. After that date if someone joins up until June 1st it will be $15.00 for the year. After June 1st, it will be $7.50 thru December. We think this will help everyone know when to pay and it will help the membership person stay up to date!
