Albion Coast Cup 2004 - The Event |
|
|
|
I made it to the Albion Coast Cup in Southampton this year. There were 32 or so coaches in total who met up on the campus of the local university for the weekend. I was the first to arrive and as I was carrying the commemorative pitch, the guard (such that he was) figured that I must belong to the group and opened the room for me. It wasn't long before more arrived and the games got underway. Emberbreeze, Venemous Breath and his lovely wife, La Venemous (aka Small Green and Round) made us all feel welcome with a bag of goodies for each of us. This bag consisted of a miniature, a pair of six sided dice and an eight sided die all NAF light purple to go with this year's block dice (as opposed to the pink that Woody currently has). Much, much better than a crap Blood Bowl coin. (Take note GW) Anyway, there were actual games played and this is a short rundown of how I did... |

My first opponent was James who was playing High Elves. He blamed Simon for talking him into this choice and every time something went wrong for him, he muttered Simon's name. We had fun in the match. I received the ball and motored down the pitch as fast as my Khemri could go (so it took about 4 turns...). By the time James got the ball, he had a fair number of players in the the dugout suffering various injuries, so he couldn't play a true elfy game. Despite a good showing, I won this match 2-0 with 4 casualties and even got a completion just to show the elves how it was done. |

Round 2 and I was facing Kenneth and his Orcs on Table 1 (!) The combination of scoring and casualties in my first game somehow took me to this rarified air. This match probably was my favourite match of the weekend even though it was a loss. My Khemri couldn't stop the Orcs from scoring, but caused damage along the way. Kenneth made a great pass in the dying moments of the game to make an end to end touchdown for his third score of the match. My consolation prize was to kill his troll. The stat line for the game was a 0-3 loss with 8-3 casualties. Very, very fun. Kenneth went on to win the Best New Player award for the tournament. Well deserved too. |

This is the scene just prior to the killing of the troll, where my mummies had several of the orcs blocked in and were getting ready to pound on them. |

With the loss came a lower table ranking for Round 3. There, I met Hangus from the ECBBL crowd and his Norse. We tussled to a 1-1 draw that showed the Norse score followed by the Khemri move once again slowly to tie things up. Both of us had our chances to go into the lead, but neither of us could in the end. The Norse dugout was looking quite cosy with casualties by the end of the match. Another good game. 1-1 score with 6-0 casualties. |

Sunday morning and Round 4. I had another draw against Norse. Orin and I encouraged one another to make plays, though the dice didn't seem to favour either of us. (Nuffle does suck) I rolled a great number of double skulls and even a triple skulls when blocking. Orin made a good pass from what I can recall, but didn't get far enough away from my skeletons who quickly brought him down. Stat line for the match 1-1 draw with 5-0 casualties. Another fun match. |

The draw left me about the same position that I was in the previous round. In round 5, I played The Sheriff's Necros. I couldn't do much to them to be honest. I would knock them out and they would regenerate. They moved faster than I did and were more agile too. My 1-2 defeat would have been a 1-3 defeat if his werewolf had kept his footing on a 'go for it' . Another great loss for the Khemri. 1-2 was the score and 4-2 was the casualty line. |

Strange given the distribution of teams that I never met a Skaven one, there were 8 of them if I recall correctly. As you can probably guess, I worried coaches with my casualty count especially after the first three matches though I didn't think much of it until it was pointed out how well I was doing with them. One more match to go and a couple other photos as well on the next page. |

Continued on for my final match and to see what other people were up to... |
