An article in the Houston Chronicle on centenarians contained the following:
Glen "Blackie" Wheeler, who turned 100 earlier this year, served on the the USS Nevada during World War I and traveled throughout the world.
"When we passed Japan, there had been a typhoon or hurricane, and the country was in desperate shape. Hundreds of people were dead, and the government asked us for help. Our men dug this big, big hole for the mass burial -- really it was the worst thing I've ever seen in my life."
When the United States entered World War II in 1941, Wheeler was well beyond draft age and the father of two. But the Army needed an expert in aerial photography, so Wheeler enlisted again.
"My wife (Doris) and I talked it over. She said if I really wanted to go, she'd take care of the business. And she did a good job, too. When I came back, there was quite a bit of money in the bank, and everything was paid for."
At the end of the war, he turned down a promotion to lieutenant colonel and decided to leave the military.
"I was homesick. I wanted to see Mama and our two little girls," he says.
The Wheelers recently celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary.His obituary in the Houston Chronicle, Houston, TX, June 20, 2000 read:
GLEN WOODFUL WHEELER Glen Woodful Wheeler "Blackie" went to be with the Lord on June 16, 2000 at the age of 101 years. He was born on May 15, 1899 in Fairgrove, MO, but moved to Texas as a young boy. At the age of 18, he joined the Marine Corps during WWI. Glen was an early pioneer in the Texas oil industry, residing in San Antonio, Texas and married Dorris Woods in 1936. During WWII, Glen (also known as Blackie) enlisted in the Army Air Force and served as Executive Officer of the 23rd Photo Rec. Squadron in North Africa. He was a rancher as well as a businessman and retired to the Texas Hill Country in the 1960's. He is survived by his loving wife, Dorris Wheeler of Houston, TX; Glen and Dorris were blessed with three daughters and one son, Glenda W. Ewing of Houston, Betty Lou Vaughan of Fredericksburg, Kay Blevins of Kerrville, and Richard L. Wheeler of Houston. During the 70's Glen and Dorris moved to Houston, TX and lived there until his death. The Wheeler family also includes sixteen grandchildren and fifteen Great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. In 1977, Glen was honored by the State of Texas for his dedicated service during both wars; in recognition of receiving the WWII Victory Medal and the Bronze Star Medal. He was very proud to be an American and lived his life as such. Glen was a devoted husband, father, and Grandfather and a friend to all. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. But his family was his highest priority. Glen was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of Second Baptist Church in Houston, and a member of the American Legion. Services will be held Friday, June 23, 2000 at 11:30 A.M. at Colonial Funeral Home, 625 Kitty Hawk Road in Universal City, TX. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with military honors. Visitation will be Thursday, June 22, 2000 from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Ewing, both of Houston, Kay Blevins of Kerrville and Betty Lou Allen of Fredericksburg; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Glen W. Wheeler. Dorris was a member of the Second Baptist Church in Houston and a member of the DAR. A visitation will be held Tuesday, May 31, 2005, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Colonial Funeral Home in Universal City. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, 2005, at Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.
