One branch of the old Indian Trading Path used to run south from near Oxford to just West of where the Econo Lodge motel sits today, at Butner. This would be about 3-4 miles from where Elliott Wheeler grew up. There used to be a store about a quarter of a mile north of where the Econo Lodge is, between Lyon Station Road and the railroad. The story was told that when Elliott Wheeler was a boy, he and two friends, thier names long forgotten, put two billy goats in the window of the old store. The goats ate the labels off the cans and the owner couldn't tell what he was selling.
Their children were all born and grew up in the 16 room house on the Wheeler homeplace, known in the as "the Wheeler Hotel." The house is located just off W.B. Clark Road, near Credmoor. The rear portion of the house has been removed.
His obituary says: "Benjamin Elliott Wheeler, 67, retired farmer who has made his home here [Oxford] for the past seven years, died at 5:50 Friday morning in Granville Hospital. He had been sick for five days with heart disease, which he suffered unexpectedly Sunday night prior to his death. The funeral was conducted at the Wheeler home on Williamsboro Street at 3 p.m. Saturday ... Burial was in Creedmoor Cemetery. Following the sale of his large famr at Creedmoor several years ago, Mr. Wheeler purchased a home in this city and had resided here in retirement since that time."
