When he was only 16 years old, Rufus Meadows broke into organized baseball with the Petersburg team in the Old Virginia League, in 1924. Later he played in the Cotton States League and in 1926, The Cincinnati Reds drafted him into the Major Leagues. He was sent back to the Cotton States for more seasoning. Later he was in the Three-I League. He was with the Ft. Worth club in 1929, then Topeka, and he was with Wichita in 1931. In 1932 he was a rookie pitcher with the New York Yankees. This was the same team that had such greats as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Toni Lazzeri, and Lefty Gomez. Rufus Meadows, also known as Rudy, Rufe, and Left, was described as quiet, gentlemanly, modest, with a shy grin - not a headline hunter. After the 1932 Little World Series, the Yankee management opted him to another Yankee owned team, the Newark Bears. On 19 June, at the age of 24, he pitched a no-hit, no-run game for the Bears against the Montreal Royals. Later in the season the Bears took on the Yankees for an exhibition game. With Rufus pitching, the Bears overcame a 5-run Yankee lead to defeat Babe Ruth & Co. 8-5. After his 15 year professional baseball career, he became a mechanic in sheet metal fabrication with Boeing in Wichita, Kansas.
