| Two years ago a slate of candidates led by Michael DeGeronimo (whose wife is a teacher making over $120,00 per year) along with Eric Tusch (an administrator in a NJ school district) and James Galvin spent over $6,000 campaigning for a non-paying volunteer school board seat. They were elected in a landslide victory attributed to a huge teacher's union turnout. At that time the teacher's contract was in its second year of protracted negotiations. Last year a slate of three candidates - Eleni Carter, Wayne Chan and Jen Trumper spent over $10,000 and were elected to the M-W school board by a large margin. In a 6/26/08 THR article disclosing this information, the THR interviewed Mrs. Elizabeth Blashka, First Vice President of the Orange County School Boards and 6 year member of the Valley School District. When she was told of the amount of money Chan, Carter and Trumper spent Mrs. Blashka was quoted "Are you serious? It's not a salaried position, so why would you spend that much??" Why indeed - that is a question the taxpayers and parents in this community should be asking. The first order of business after Carter, Chan and Trumper's election to the BOE was to elevate Dr. DeGeronimo to the position of President of the BOE. The second item of business was to reduce the number of public BOE meetings from twice a month to once a mon $146m Monroe-Woodbury budget approved.
