| Q: What is a Board of Education? A: A Board of Education is a group of citizen volunteers who are elected to serve three year terms. Their primary responsibilities include development of policies that ensure the delivery of education to the community's children. They are also responsible for developing the budget that is placed before the community each May. Q. Who are the members of the M-W Board of Education, and how long have they been on the job? A. Michael DiGeronimo, President of the Board (1 year ) Eric Tusch, Vice President of the Board (1 year) James Galvin, Member (1 year) Wayne Chan, Member (newly elected) Jennifer Trumper, Member (newly elected) Eleni Kirikas-Carter, Member (newly elected) Theresa Budich, Member (15 years) Bob Curtis, Member (9 years) John Broderick, Member (3 years) Q. Can Board of Education Members be employees of the school district they serve? A. No, board members may not be employed by the school district they serve. However, a board member may be married to an employee of the school district. As a matter of fact, the President of our Board of Education is married to a district employee who works as a teacher/district coordinator and is the parent of a newly hired district employee as well. Q. How often does the Board of Education meet? A. The Board of Education meets the second Wednesday of every month (except August) at the Education Center on Route 32 in Central Valley*. Interestingly, the Board of Education in Monroe-Woodbury used to meet twice a month, but the newly elected members requested FEWER MEETINGS so the meeting calendar was severely reduced. Q. How often to the Board of Education of other school districts in Orange County meet? A. Every other school district in Orange County meets twice a month; even though most of them are substantially smaller districts with far smaller than our $150million budget. Some of the smaller districts even have months where they meet as many as three times. Q. Can members of our district's teaching staff reside outside the district? A. Yes, in fact many do. In the 2007-2008 school year 64% of the teachers in M-W lived outside the district in Orange, Rockland, Dutchess and Ulster Counties as well as in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. *PLEASE NOTE THAT THE BOARD PRESIDENT HAS RECENTLY BEEN CHANGING MEETING LOCATIONS ON SHORT NOTICE. CHECK THE DISTRICT CALENDAR TO CONFIRM LOCATIONS AND TIMES. |
