The amount of ki you start with is
determined by the kind of character you pick. see the characters
section for more information on that
You get Ki at a slower rate than Pl.. The normal amount of ki
gained for "ki training" is, 10 lines = 1 ki point.. If
you take a look at the training section, you'll see that you can get
better deals on Ki by training at different places..

can build Ki and Pl at the same time...

You
Trade in the amount of Ki asked and you get a new level of
attacks/armor. all it really does is give you a higher PL.
Once you've traded in your Ki, you loose it, and get PL in its
place.
