Elliot Lake is located in the scenic area of East Algoma and close to the northern shores of Lake Huron. The community is a leader in Retirement Living, having developed a first class Retirement Living Program following the closure of the mines in the community. Elliot Lake has also developed the tourism industry including state of the art skidoo trails, walking and hiking trails, and camping opportunities. Surrounded by multiple lakes and forests, the community is a haven for summer and winter sports, recreation and leisure all within a 20 mile radius of the community.
Health Care St. Joseph's General Hospital serves a population catchment area of 20,000 people. The 68 bed hospital and 52 bed drug and alcohol treatment facility provide a variety of services to people of all ages, including obstetrics, intensive care, 24-hour emergency, surgery, pediatrics, and general medicine. the Oaks Centre provides services for the chemically dependent person, including detoxification, a residential chemical dependency and relapse prevention program. Also included are family program, after care, and workplace teaching programs. Primary and secondary medical care is provided by the 17 local general practitioners, including family practitioners, anaesthetists, and a general surgeon. Visiting Specialists provide monthly and weekly clinics in the areas of internal medicine, cardiology, orthopaedics, nephrology , urology, pediatrics, dermatology, otolaryngology, gynaecology, psychiatry, vascular surgery, and ophthalmology surgery. Twenty-four hour emergency coverage is available for primary and secondary care. The hospital also houses services through outreach satellite services in chemotherapy, dialysis and audilogy. Paramedical services are provided in the areas of social work, chiropody, speech pathology, physiotherapy, and occupational therapy as well as laboratory, x-ray and ultrasound unit. The Algoma Public Health Unit, Home Care Algoma, East Algoma Mental Health Clinic, and the Family Life Centre offer a variety of support programs, teaching, mental health services and prevention programs. Huron Lodge and Hillside Park residences provide residential alternatives for the physically frail and elderly. Other health services, including dental offices staffed by 9 dentists, and 2 optometry offices located in Elliot Lake. Non-traditional therapies, including massage therapy and reflexology are also available. There are three medical clinics in the community, staffed by 17 local physicians. These three clinics share one on-call system for emergency coverage on a sessional fee schedule. |
