| Oil: Basil Properties: Has a very high proportion of camphor and a warm aromatic sweet-spicy smell. It is a refreshing, light and uplifting tonic. Actions: Used for nervous insomnia, anxiety and tiredness, insect bites, headaches, poor circulation and muscular aches or sprains. Home use: Massage, baths, inhalation. A few drops on a tissue clears the head. Diluted with massage oil, it can be rubbed in to relieve insect bites or aches and pains. And the smell of sweet basil in the bath will lift your spirits. WARNING: Basil is potent and may cause skin irritation in some people so always use cautiously. Avoid during pregnancy. Oil: Bay Properties: Has a woody, masculine, clove-like smell and is both warming and stimulating. It is antiseptic and has astringent properties. Actions: Excellent as a scalp stimulant, removing grease from hair and bringing blood to the skin surface. It is also good for poor circulation, cellulite or muscular aches. Home use: Massage, inhalation, compress, poultice. It is best used well diluted with a friction massage to increase the circulation-boosting effects, particularly on the scalp and across stiff tense shoulders, directly on aching muscles or areas of cellulite, and to warm winter chilled hands or feet. It can be inhaled with steam to relieve nose, throat or chest infections. WARNING: Bay should to be used in moderation, as it can irritate the mucous membrane. Oil: Bergamot Properties: Uplifting, refreshing and atiseptic. It has a fresh, subtle, spicy lemon smell with warm balsamic undertones. Action: Used to treat depression, tiredness, irritability, stress, acne and greasy skin. It is a good deodorant and will help kill germs in the home. Home use: Massage, baths, inhalation. Inhale directly from a tissue for emotional upset or negative moods. Use in moderation, a maximum of five drops, for massage or in a bah to lift your spirits. WARNING: Bergamot oil can irritate skin, especially if it is subsequently exposed to sunlight. It is safe for home use, if well diluted. |
