Fingerpicking is one of the guitar folk styles. It comes from popular music and is a complex guitar technique for singing accompaniment and solo playing. It's the best style for blues, folk and ragtime.

The musical origin comes from the negro blues and the oldest one is the Delta blues, in Mississipi (the Deep South). The blues is a lonely way of singing sad songs. The best instrument to sing blues is the guitar. Black people imported the banjo from Africa but they changed and they preferred guitar for blues.

Fingerpicking is a great and special technique from american guitar. Its characteristics are:

  • Steady bass played with the thumb.
  • The melody is played with the index and middle finger.
  • It is an imitation of the piano and began on the turn of the XX century.
