November 12   American "Criminal Justice" and Crime Policy

The third part of the course will focus on how the "CJS" has changed over the last thirty years in response to political pressure to "get tough" on street crime. We will also look at who (other than politicians and their corporate sponsors) have benefited from these massive changes and the tens of billions of dollars in public money involved. This is the flip side of the corporate crime coin - while large corporations have become more predatory (and often more criminal!) with the move toward total globalization, they have also been instrumental in promoting (and even sometimes writing!) the get tough on street crime legislation that they then profit from.

November 19   Police and Courts in America

This week we look at two of the three three components of the "criminal justice system" - police and courts. The focus will be on how these institutions really work, in contrast to the media images that are popularized in movies and TV shows (and many textbooks!). Two major parts of this analysis will be to explain how police culture and court culture work and why they are ineffective because they have very little real access to crime.
