aEver Almost Die because you were playing with fire? ...

February 7, 2007 (Posted by Mike)

I was just listening to a conversation on my favorite morning show about kids burning their hands by sticking them in an Easy Bake Oven ... which is now being recalled.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17005457/?GT1=9033

This got me thinking about all the times I played with Fire and probably came a lot closer to dying than I would have liked.

- New Years Eve 2006 ... Rob dosing a van bench seat with gasoline and setting it on fire. I panicked a little ... but after 10 minutes ... it finally got put out. This one isn’t really my fault.

- Trying to put out a candle with a can of compressed air ... This one was a little me being retarded and a little false packaging. I looked at the side of the can and it read something like “non-flammable ... but not intended for use around open flame.” So of course ... I tried to test this out and created a HUGE fireball and sprayed hot wax all over the place. The wax was worse than the fireball ... as it burned me on my face. I should probably sue ...

- Starting a mini camp fire in a portable fire-pit with gasoline ... The fire shot about 10 feet in the air and my face was right over it when it combusted...

- Probably the best one of all ... Trying to melt a dime with a propane torch when I was 10 ... This one was great because I was outside with the dime and torch ... the dime was on the concrete and I was heating it from the top. I was thinking I was being as safe as could be.

I heated the dime for about 5 minutes ... to the point it was Bright orange and ... POP! ... it flew straight up into the air. Now ... my face was right over the god-damn thing when it popped and I felt the wind as it passed by.

It took 10 seconds for it to return to Earth about 10 feet away ... burning a tiny hole in the trampoline over by the side of the house.

Anyone else have any good stories?

aCan the PS3 survive another $600 Christmas? ...

February 8, 2007 (Posted by Mike)

In one of the podcasts I listen to ...“The Video Game” jocks ... they talked about something rather interesting.

The topic was ... “Can The PS3 survive another Christmas at $600?”

The video game jocks are huge Microsoft fan-boys ... so their argument was no ... of course. However ... the idea is interesting.

From sales figures ... the PS3 isn’t doing well. Granted ... it is still moving off the shelves at a decent clip ... (I still don’t see them around regularly) ... but I think they are still way south of selling 1 million units. The thing we have to remember is that it is still February and early in the life of the PS3 ... but there are a couple of things going on at Sony that really scare me and fear for the future of the PS3.

Sony lost nearly 2 billion dollars last quarter because both their game division and movie division are in the tank right now. Because of this ... there are rumors that Sony is flirting with the idea of dropping the price point on the PS3. Now while this sounds great ... Sony investors will look at this as a “desperate move,” and it will scare them a tad.

No one I’ve talked to or listened to ... maybe besides EGM’s Shane ... thinks that the PS3 is worth $600. There is no way that I would ever drop $600 on a video game system ... especially when the competitor is going to have all the games I want to play on their platform as well.

The gap between 360 and PS3 is going to widen over this year.

20 - Oh - Savage (2007) is a huge “upswing” year for the 360. They have a lot of awesome games coming out ... improved hardware ... and lets not forget the biggest event of the year ... the Halo 3 launch.

What does the PS3 have to look forward to? Mediocre games ... a steep cost ... and bad PR. PS3's killer ap (Metal Gear Solid 4) isn’t coming out until 2008 (probably) ... and even then it’ll probably come to the 360 eventually.

Let’s travel forward in time for a second and visit Black Friday 20-oh-savage. You will have 3 choices for new councils. Who’s going to be buying them?

Wii - You think this Christmas was huge for Nintendo? Just wait until next year when they will be readily available ... I’m predicting 2.5 - 3 million sold in November/December. Everyone will be buying these up.

360 - Anyone who loved Halo and hasn’t already bought a 360 will probably jump on board this Christmas ... I think the 360 will steadily sell systems all year and experience a surge in Q4. The 360 will probably attract parents who have teenage sons who want a new system ... because it will cost $200 less then the “other guy”

PS3 - Will appeal to blu-ray fans ... Final Fantasy fans ... and maybe Metal Gear fans. But the $600 is probably going to scare away any parents who are shopping for their kids. I may be wrong ... but since it won’t be quite as new or hyped ... I think the PS3 is really going to suffer at such a high price next to the Wii and 360/Halo 3.

Don’t get me wrong ... I hope the PS3 does REALLY well. Competition is always good for consumers. If the PS3 starts kicking ass ... it’s just going to make Microsoft want to get even better. And lets face it ... when has Microsoft ever given up? Microsoft will continue to plug away until they win or go out of business (which will never happen). Microsoft continues to lose money on their Xbox division ... but it doesn’t matter to Bill Gates because he has such deep pockets that they will just continue to grow and grow and get better and better.

I know you know I’m right ... But I’m sure you’re asking “What would you do Mike?”

That is tough to say. Sony’s Playstation brand has made a living by offering terrific games first, exclusive games, and all at an affordable price. I have no idea why they decided to go away from that model this generation ... but they did. And now it is too late to fix it. Xbox has a huge lead so games like Madden, NBA 2k, Tiger woods, and others have a larger audience on 360. Sony couldn’t lock up past exclusives like Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear, Virtua Fighter, and Resident Evil. And they are charging an arm and a leg. It’s like the higher-ups at Sony said “fuck you” to their past success and tried to prove their brand could sell a terrible idea.

I guess it just goes to show you that pride Goethe before the fall. The PS3 is in trouble ... and I really hope that Sony proves me wrong and has a huge 20-oh-savage.

aPrice of renting video games ?!?!?! ...

February 13, 2007 (Posted by Eric)

Ok, so I was "out" of the whole console gaming world for a few years and so I never realized how expensive the price of renting a game has become. I went to Blockbuster yesterday to use my free game rental pass (from BB online) and saw the price to rfent a game if I had to pay for it. $7.99!!!!!! That is a fucking rip off. What happened to the days of renting SNES games for 2 bucks.

Btw, I rented Rainbow 6:Vegas for the 360 and it isnt too bad so far. IT is no Gears, but I can already see where the multiplayer is pretty fun.

King and Abrams in Talks for Dark Tower
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
February 14, 2007

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed an earlier IGN story that said Stephen King and J.J. Abrams are in talks to bring King's "Dark Tower" book series to the screen.

They are not sure, however, if the project will be a feature film or a TV series. Abrams' Bad Robot production company has a first-look deal at Paramount for film projects and a deal with Warner Bros. Television for TV projects. The project is not yet set up at either company.

The trade adds that King's tale -- which sprawls across seven books as it blends the fantasy, sci-fi, horror and Western genres -- might seem better suited for a multiple-episode television treatment. On the other hand, its potential cost might call for a large-scale cinematic treatment.

It is also unclear whether Abrams would take on the project solely as a producer or whether he would direct as well.

Rob has been bugging and bugging me to watch this movie for about a month now ... and I finally got around to it the other day. And man oh man ... it's pretty damn good guys. I'm sure that Derek has seen it ... but it's right up his alley ... but the rest of you should check it out. Josh Hartnett actully kicks some ass in this movie.

Sidenote though ... why is it I hate Morgan Freeman in movies? Maybe he should stick to voice-overs.

aThe Departed (8.5 out of 10) ...

February 15, 2007 (Posted by Eric)

Very good movie, although not quite what I expected. Great acting by almost everyone in this movie. It almost had a dark comedy aspect to it which I did not expect(mainly shown by the way they kill people). Overall a good movie and since thie year's oscar possibilities are thin, probably deserves the Oscar Nom. that it has received.

Invicible may be the precitable, goodwill movie that we all expect, but damn I am a sucker for this type of movie. It combines sports in a good way with real life and makes you really feel for the character. Even though the ending did not happen in real life, the movie is a good flick and great to watch when you are in a "down-in-the-dumps" kind of mood.

Vasectomy: $400. Speechless look on her face: priceless.
Date: 2007-02-06, 2:24PM PST

I'll try to sum up a funny story that happened a few years ago:

I got a vasectomy.

I met a girl soon afterwards. She was nice and attractive but with a selfish streak that raised a big red flag. She was 32 at the time and I could practically HEAR her biological clock ticking. Regardless, she was a good lay, easy on the eyes, and reasonably good company.

I did NOT tell her about my vasectomy and I always used a condom with her to protect against STDs. She assumed, obviously, that the condom was only used for birth control. Silly girl.

We date for a few months. I never made any move towards commitment but she brought it up ocassionally. For me, this was a casual but pleasant relationship. For her - as I was to find out - it was part of life-changing series of events that she was planning very carefully ...
