WHAT IS THE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION OF THE UNITED NATIONS AND WHAT DOES IT DO?

  • is part of the Economic and Social Council of the UN, mentioned specifically, in the UN Charter

  • is the world's highest intergovernmental body with a broad human rights mandate

  • has 53 member states elected by the Economic and Social Council

  • in the past has had members that can be human rights abusers (ex. Iran, Cuba, & China) since seats are in proportion to each region's share of the total UN membership. (This is being corrected )

  • meets once a year for a 6-week session

  • considers and adopts over a hundred resolutions setting international standards

  • reviews reports of those monitoring countries abusing human rights

  • considers complaints of abusers and countries with a consistent pattern of gross violations of human rights standards

  • appoints rapporteurs and a monitoring committee to investigate abuses and then issues reports -adopts resolutions to censure human rights abuser countries

  • agrees on the type of technical assistance to provide human rights institutions

  • has a High Commissioner to promote and protect human rights for all.
