Living apart for several months, at a time when I was growing far beyond the person I previously had been, wound up affecting my marriage beyond the point of recovery. After I returned to North Texas in the summer of 2002, my wife and I encountered a growing divide between the two of us. By the beginning of my final semester of seminary, we had separated, and soon after decided to divorce.

I finished seminary in Spring 2005 with my unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE), interning as a hospice chaplain in Fort Worth. I wondered if continuing chaplaincy, rather than serving churches, might fit my caling more fully. Thus I accepted an opportunity to do a CPE residency, a more advanced and intensive program (4 CPE units, in addition to the original one). I spent a year as a hospital chaplain at Harris Methodist H-E-B Hospital, in the suburbs of Fort Worth. The experience was powerful, but convinced me that, while I liked many aspects of chaplaincy, I needed the community of a congregation to serve in ministry more effectively and authentically.
