Track 4: Song: "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" Artist: U2 I started my undergraduate career in 1990 as a Math major, with tentative plans for a Ph.D and the life of a university professor. By my second semester, I was protesting the Persian Gulf War as part of a small but active peace and justice coalition on the UNT campus. (I should say, the first Persian Gulf War.) Those lessons I had learned from studying the 1960s anti-war movement were now coming home to me in a tangible way. Thinking through my attitudes toward war on a deeper level, among other influences, led me to switch my major to Philosophy after my Freshman year. I made my way relatively far along that path, completing my Masters degree in philosophy, but it wasnt enough to give me a sense of wholeness, which still seemed lacking. At the same time, my peace activism evolved into volunteer activities with political groups, the local AIDS Services agency, and others. Also during that time, I discovered a desire, in so many of my interpersonal relationships, to listen and offer support as friends and loved ones shared their pain and anguish over various life challenges. I wasnt sure what to do with this desire, or my passion for social justice work. So I stayed on my academic path, though I always felt like I was settling for a career that was OK, but not quite "it." backward to "Imagine" forward to "The River of Dreams" | |||||
