Epirus is located in the north-east corner of Greece. It borders with Albania. It is one of the most mountainous areas of the country as the Pindus range, the "backbone of Greece", runs through it. Due to its alpine nature its climate is continental in the interior and mild in the coastal areas. The high altitute and the heavy rainfall, for the Greek standards, favour the dence plantation and the formation of alpine forests, some of which are protected National Parks with rich wildlife. Epirus consists of the prefectures of Ioannina, Arta, Thesprotia and Preveza.
The mountains give the impression that they rise up out of the sea, out of the Ionian. Forests, wild vegetation, lagoons, rivers , wet-lands, provide sanctuary to thousands of birds. Fabulous beaches and unforgettable verdant shores bathed in sunlight are washed by the emerald Ionian. In Epirus, life flows as quietly as the rivers. The whole area is a living folk museum as time seems to have slowed down here. The legend of Ali Pasha and kira Frosini still hounds the legendary lake of Ioannina. Life is filled with the songs of the migratory birds and the whispering of the leaves. The soul is resurrected in some picturesque village, some magical town decorated with the famous traditional epirotic architecture. The forests, speckled with the famous arched stone bridges of Epirus, echo with the rhythms, the folk songs and the sad, passionate moirologia, the lament songs of the area.
