Lesson Five
Non-Fiction Media Unit Plan:
Creating a “Breaking News” Website on Cassie Brown’s Death on the Ice
 

Lesson 5: Creating the Website

Total Time: 50 minutes
Location: School Computer Lab or Learning Resources Centre

5 minutes – Administration
                 – Settle class down, take attendance, check homework, etc.

5 minutes – Dividing Students for Tasks
                 – The group who worked on page layout will be put to work creating that layout
                using a program such as Netscape Composer.
                 – Assign individual students to create a HTML document / page, one each, for
                each of the news stories and media releases.  These students can work as groups if
                not enough computers are available.
                – Remaining students can perform such tasks as scanning, editing, and preparing
                pictures and graphics, or can work in groups with students creating news story or
                media release pages.

35 minutes – Group Work
                – Students perform assigned tasks.
                – All elements are combined into the final website.

5 minutes – Administration
                – Assigning homework, tidy-up work space, prepare for dismissal, etc.
