Obituary from the Zanesville Times-Recorder newspaper: Harry Gobel Dies - Retired Tobacconist - Harry H. Gobel, of 250 Luck Avenue, prominent tobacco merchant for many years in Zanesville, died at 8:55 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 2) at Bethesda Hospital where he had been a patient three weeks. Mr. Gobel was born Oct. 31, 1877, a son of David and Margaret Gobel Gobel, his mother having been a Gobel before marrying his father, although they were no relation to each other. Mr. Gobel's mother was a sister of P. R. Gobel, the tobacconist, for whom he went to work during his senior year at Lash High School in 1894. The store was then located on Main Street and sold tobacco, pipes, cigarettes and other items such as newspapers. It soon became a popular meeting place. In 1925 Gobel's moved to Market Street and transformed the business from retail to wholesale. Upon the death of his uncle, P. R. Gobel in 1936, the business was incorporated with Harry becoming president, his daughter Mrs. Robert (Ruth) Geyer serving as vice president and bookkeeper. He retired as president in 1966. Mr. Gobel married Letta Kearns in 1902 and shortly after that moved to 250 Luck Avenue where he lived until his death. Mrs. Gobel died Oct. 30, 1961. Although a tobacconist all his adult life, Mr. Gobel did not smoke, saying he had tried it a few times but it had no appeal for him. A well-remembered symbol of Mr. Gobel's tobacco business was a large wooden Indian christened by P. R. Gobel as "Chief Penokee" which stood for years in front of the store on Market Street and prior to that on Main Street. Mr. Gobel was a member of the Central Presbyterian Church, a charter member of the Brotherhood of the Church, a charter member of the Zanesville Rotary Club, the Zanesville chapter of Amrou Grotto; the National Association of Tobacco Dealers and the Ohio Association of Tobacco Dealers.
