38 | Cost To Build | Bought body in 1982, didn't get on road till 1986. Body cost $5,000 motor parts were about $2500 and I totaled out at $11,000 but that is in 1982-86 dollars. |

40 | Comments | Motor cooled well in the Northeast, but when I moved to Florida in 1991 I was having an overheating problem and my workload prevented me from fixing it, so I put the car in storage. I'm now living in Virginia and have fixed the problem. The CMC body didn't have enough room for a stock shroud. I had used a stock shroud that I had cut down and it wasn't giving me full cooling. I have cut the inside of the hood reglassed it and moved the hinges to make room for a full shroud. I also switched my ring gear from a 3.88 to a 4.11 and added a type 4 cooler (not necessary). This motor has a very good torque curve and is indestructable. It has power from right off idle and if I rev it up and dump the clutch it will burn out all the way across an intersection. It's just fun to drive. It is very low maintenance and has a working heater that has been tested driving to Fall VW events in New Hampshire. With all Berg parts it would be a very expensive motor to build today. |
